Tim Jones will take over scoring duties for second season

"Human Target" is about to get a new sound.
"Chuck" composer Tim Jones is going to take over scoring duties on the Fox action drama for the show's second season.
Jones is taking over for Bear McCreary, who is shifting to AMC's zombie drama "The Walking Dead." (Jones will continue to work on the NBC show too).
This is just one of a few changes coming to the Warner Bros.-produced show. There's a new showrunner (Matthew Miller from "Chuck") and a new female main character played by Indira Varma.
Miller told Comic-Con that there's another cast addition yet to come, that Christopher Chance's team will soon include its first female member.
"We're adding an as-yet-uncast 22-year-old woman who's a despicable thief," said Miller, who added that she'll figure into Chance (Mark Valley) and Guerrero's (Jackie Earle Haley) back stories.
Touching on having a new female boss joining the show in Varma, Chi McBride (Winston) said it would "set up a lot of great tension and great comedy."
Miller also talked about the show's move to Friday nights, a night that's been very difficult for recent Fox genre shows.
"It's not always the best time slot, but 'The X-Files' did well on Friday nights," he said.
Nice. I have never watched human target - I don't think it has aired here, yet. But now, I might just pick up a DVD import, so I am ready for season two with its Tim-Jones-Soundtrack :D
ReplyDeletePlease stop working on Human Target. The change in music has almost single handedly killed the show, and in the space of only one episode.
ReplyDeleteIt seems as if there is barely any score, and what is there, is not very good. I'm a fan of Chuck, but it just seems that you don't get how Human Target is supposed to sound.
Please please please stop working on Human Target. I'd almost never put someones work down, Id just ignore it, but the new theme is absolutely destroying one of the best things about the last season. It doesnt get the hairs on the back of my neck to stand up, it doesnt evoke emotions or feeling, it takes the show from potentially amazing and cult classic to quickly forgotten. For me the theme could be a major reason why the show might get cancelled, while that may sound an overreaction I'm sure you of all people would know how important music is in setting a mood. Please, if youre in it for the money, at least score the ep using cast offs from Bear, even reusing his music would be far far better, the premiere would have been epic with the old theme as it is it was so disappointing. Please use the old theme, PLEASE!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of your work Mr. Jones. I love the music on Chuck, and I really like the new direction of Human Target (jeez - shame on the people above for being such rude cowards). I got to see the first three episodes of the season in advance, and I think the contemporary vibe of the music is fun, colorful, exciting, and a good change for Human Target. The music from last season was almost distracting in the sense that it quoted its theme ad nauseum. It was cheesy- John Williams doesn't even do that.

ReplyDeleteI really don't wish to be disrespectful, and I understand the new direction for the show, and I know that commenting here will not make a difference, but I don't think the new music fits what Human Target is. The theme from season one sold me on the show before I even saw it, and after that I was treated to a season of some of the most beautifully crafted, precisely fitted score music on television today. It's unfair to compare one composer to another, but Bear's work for HT showed a level of dedication, insight, and compositional skill rarely seen in modern television. I understand that you have a new mission now, but I can only hope that you have plans to rework the title theme and put some more thought into the overall score. For a show that claims to be attempting to inject some "significant" female characters into the story, using a cliched "here comes sexy woman" guitar jangle to introduce Isla was not very clever. It's not the Human Target way, and neither is the theme, whose unmotivated phase changes, modulations, and rhythmic shifts continue to baffle me upon what is now the dozenth listen.
ReplyDeleteI'd just like to point out that oftentimes composers have less control over the musical direction of a show than many might think. While I'm not supportive of the musical change myself, I also want to recognize that many of the comments here are unfair to Tim Jones. Comments such as "you don't get how Human Target is supposed to sound" or "please use the old theme" are probably better directed at Matt Miller. Miller enacted the change in musical direction-- Jones is mearly executing that vision, probably to the best of his ability.
ReplyDeleteSupposing that McCreary had been asked to return, Miller would still have demanded pop tunes and forgone the grand orchestral sound of season one. And then it would be McCreary stuck trying to make the best of, what is in my opinion, a bad creative directive. So, I don't think it's really fair to draw comparisons between the two composers here either, considering the drastically different conditions they worked/are working under.
To end on a more positive note: if you're reading, Tim Jones, I really enjoy your work on Chuck!
so how's that Chuck Soundtrack release doing? Hope it's still happening, because it would be too bad if this awesome score would never become available to the public :).
ReplyDeleteNot a big fan of the changes to the show's direction.... but I can tolerate some of it. The theme though, used to really psyche me up and excite me, like turning the page of a comic to find out what happens next. That feeling is entirely gone now.

The new "Human Target" theme song is so embarrassingly bad that it is totally incomprehensible what motivated its use.

ReplyDeleteTim Jones is horrible for Human Target. His music for Human Target is very upbeat and annoying. His style works for Chuck, but it fails with Human Target. They should fire him and replace him with Sean Callery or get Bear back.
ReplyDeleteJust watched "Communication Breakdown" The last 3 minutes are some the most intense, well acted scenes I have ever seen on television and the music you created for it is , is the the life it! The one thing that ties it all together. It is without a doubt -SUPERB!
ReplyDeleteI watched the last 3 minutes over a dozen times for the music and the drama. The show is right on target ,for me, and the music is light years ahead of last season ,for me. Thank you Mr Jones for creating such a deep core for the show!
